How to Replace a Fuel Injector in a Honda Accord

The fuel injector in a Honda Accord mixes fuel with air under pressure and rendered carburetors obsolete during the late 1980s. A fuel injector has programmable firmware that allows the same hardware to handle different fuels. The fuel injector consists only of a nozzle and valve; it still requires a pump to deliver fuel into the engine.

• Socket wrench set

1. Determine which fuel injector your Honda Accord will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. Models made from 1976 to 1985 have a 1.6L or 1.8L engine and 1986 to 1989 models have a 2.0L engine. Models built from 1990 to 1993 are equipped with a 2.2L engine. Models made from 1994 to 1997 have a 2.2L or a 2.7L engine.

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench and relieve the fuel system pressure. Remove any components needed to gain access to the fuel rail.

3. Unfasten the mounting bolts for the fuel rail with a socket wrench and disconnect the fuel rail. Carefully remove the fuel injectors from the intake manifold. Discard the old cushion rings, O-rings and seal rings.

4. Install the new fuel injectors by reversing the removal procedure. Lubricate the injector O-ring seals with clean engine oil prior to installation. Align the center line on the injector with the mark on the fuel rail when placing them into the fuel rail.

5. Turn the ignition on to pressurize the fuel system and start the engine to check for fuel leaks.
