How to Replace Windshield-Washer Tubing in a Toyota Highlander

If you notice the windshield in your Toyota Highlander isn't getting any washer fluid, but the washer reservoir tank is full, you might need to replace the tubing. The tubing is what transports the fluid from the tank to the windshield. The instructions below are for recent models of both the four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy tubing or tubing/valve assemblies specifically made for the Highlander SUV. Avoid the one-size-fits-all assembly as it will not fit properly.

  2. Step 2

Find the Highlander's windshield washer reservoir tank on the passenger's side front, directly behind the headlight and in front of the engine coolant tank.

  3. Step 3

Disconnect the tubing at the windshield side first and drain the remaining fluid into a separate container for disposal.

  4. Step 4

Detach the tubing from the bottom end of the reservoir. You'll need to be underneath the Highlander to reach this connection. Remove the front quarter panel, if necessary.

  5. Step 5

Connect the new tubing to the washer reservoir, then the windshield outlets.

  6. Step 6

Fill the reservoir with fresh washer fluid and test the wipers. You might notice that it takes a few minutes to prime the new tubing before you see washer fluid coming out onto the windshield.

Tips & Warnings
  • Since the Toyota Highlander has significant height clearance, you'll be able to work from underneath it without using a jack.
