Things You'll Need:
- Replacement springs
- Safety goggles
- Floor jack and stands
- Socket wrench and sockets
- Box wrench
- Adjustable crescent wrench
- Lug wrench
- Torque wrench
- Spring compressor (VAG 1752/2) and associated tools
- Vise

Step 1
Raise the Jetta, if necessary, and secure the wheels with jack stands.

Step 2
Remove the strut from the Jetta. This step will be slightly different for the front and rear springs, as the rear spring mounts may be accessed through the trunk, depending upon the model year.

Step 3
Fasten the spring compressor into a vise and attach the strut to the compressor.

Step 4
Pull off the mounting bolt cap and compress the spring in order to take the self-locking nut off the piston rod. Match the location of spring mount and retainer for use when reinstalling.

Step 5
Remove the spring seat and components. Take the strut out of the compressor and then remove the spring from the compressor. This step is potentially dangerous as the spring carries a lot of potential energy which must be carefully released.

Step 6
Replace the spring and inspect the components for signs of wear.

Clamp the new spring into the compressor.

Step 2
Compress the spring and carefully slide the strut down through the spring. This step needs to be done cautiously to makes sure the spring stays immobilized.

Step 3
Put the spring seat and strut components back into the assembly.

Step 4
Put on a new self-locking nut and install the mounting bolt cap to the top of the assembly.

Step 5
Take the strut assembly off the spring compressor and install it onto the Jetta.

Step 6
Perform a safety check before taking the Jetta on the road.
