How to Replace an Air Filter in a Mitsubishi Eclipse

Improve gas mileage and increase the engine life of your Mitsubishi Eclipse by keeping a clean air filter in place. A clean filter lets air move easily to the engine, causing the engine to labor less. Air filters should be changed every 30,000 miles, or 3,000 when the car is driven in dusty areas. It should take no more than 5 to 10 minutes to change the air filter.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Turn the Eclipse off before changing the filter to prevent harm or injury from possible engine backfires. Keep the engine off until the air filter has been changed and the housing unit is fully assembled.

  2. Step 2

Lift the hood of the Eclipse. Locate the air filter housing unit just to the right of the engine block, on the driver's side of the car. Look for a black, plastic box that has an accordion-type hose attached to it that leads to the engine.

  3. Step 3

Loosen the clips that hold the housing unit lid in place. Lift the lid off of the base.

  4. Step 4

Remove the old filter from the housing unit, being careful not to loosen any dirt from it. Clean any remaining debris out of the unit. Wipe the inner and outer surfaces with a damp cloth.

  5. Step 5

Place the new air filter in the housing unit. Use a K&N air filter, part number 33-2285, for a Mitsubishi Eclipse manufactured during the years 2006 to 2008. Locate older Eclipse air filters online or at your local auto supply store.

  6. Step 6

Put the lid back on the air filter housing unit. Reattach the clips to secure the lid in place.
