How to Replace a Clockspring in a Honda Prelude

The clockspring in your Honda Prelude allows for the proper function of the airbag, horn and cruise control. If your horn stops working or the airbag light stays on continuously, replacing the clockspring may return these systems to proper working order.

Instructions

1. Disable your driver's side airbag by first disconnecting the cables from the battery of your Honda Prelude. Start with the negative connection and then disconnect the positive cable.

2. Allow the airbag in your Honda Prelude to discharge for at least three minutes before performing repairs on or around the airbag. Remove the access panel at the lower end of the steering wheel and disconnect the 2-pin electrical connection for the airbag.

3. Separate the airbag from the steering wheel using a T-30 Torx bit to loosen the fastening screw. Remove the airbag and unplug the connections to the horn and cruise control.

4. Take off the fastener to the steering wheel and align the steering wheel so that the wheels face forward. Mark the steering wheel and the steering column on your Honda Prelude to ensure proper alignment when replacing the steering wheel.

5. Rock the steering wheel of your Honda Prelude gently back and forth or use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel. Locate the clockspring and disconnect all attachments.

6. Replace the clockspring with a Honda Prelude Column Clock Spring and reattach its connections. Put the steering wheel back into place and replace the airbag following the steps in reverse.

Tips & Warnings

• All models except the 1996 Honda Prelude have a 2-pin electrical connection for the airbag. In the 1996 Prelude, remove the steering wheel access cover, remove the 3-pin electrical connection and re-connect this connection to the red shorting connector located in the same area.
