How to Troubleshoot the Steering System in a Dodge Caravan
The Dodge Caravan minivan is one of the three Chrysler minivan series credited with creating the minivan market. Currently in it's fifth generation, it remains a popular family transport vehicle. Steering is especially important for your family's safety and you can troubleshoot problems with the steering system on all models if you follow a few simple rules.

1
Maintain your minivan's steering components. Good maintenance can prevent most common steering problems. Check the tie rod ends and steering linkage every 15,000 miles and lubricate every 30,000. Rotate the tires and balance the wheels on a regular schedule and make sure the front end is aligned.

2
Refill the power steering fluid whenever the dipstick reads below full. Don't use transmission fluid; use Mopar Power steering fluid or an equivalent brand. Run the engine for a couple of minutes after filling to make sure the fluid level doesn't drop. If the fluid is dirty replace it entirely, and check the reservoir for contamination.

3
Inspect your power steering fluid system for loose belts, signs of leaks or loose hose connections. Even if the hoses don't leak a loose connection can let air into the system.
-
4
Check the power steering pump for pressure if your steering slips or the car becomes hard to steer. If the pump is working properly looks for leaks from the power steering rack and look for excessively play in the rack mounts.
-
5
Correct excessive wheel shimmy by looking for play in the tie rods and steering rack. You may need to adjust or repair them. Excessive tire wear can also cause the wheels to shimmy. Replace tires in pairs, even if only one tire is worn.
-
6
Look for worn or bad tie rods or a bad steering rack if the car pulls to one side. If the steering linkage is fine, the problem may be with the brakes.
