Instructions

    • 1

Keep up with routine maintenance, including lubricating the steering linkage every 7500 miles. Inspect the linkage components for looseness or signs of wear. You should even check suspension and make sure the body is properly attached to the frame.

    • 2

Check power steering fluid levels twice a year with the wheels straight and fluid warmed to normal operating temperature. Use GM power steering fluid and keep fluid levels between the cold and hot marks. Don't use transmission fluid.

    • 3

Look at the hydraulics, including the gear and pump, hoses, valves and cylinders. Make sure the pump draws down engine RPMs when you apply power steering and make sure the valves are free and clean.

    • 4

Evacuate the hoses and test the steering pump. Make sure the pump provides the proper flow to the steering box. Look for signs of wear in the hoses, contaminants and problems with the reservoir.

    • 5

Inspect the gearbox for damage or wear to seals, shafts and parts. If you see any leaks you will need to rebuild or replace the steering gear. Double-check to make sure the gear mounting isn't loose.

    • 6

Keep your car free from other complications which can affect steering. This can include worn or uneven tires, poor front-end alignment, wheel or brake drums out of balance, a loose rear axle and even overloading.

    • 7

Take your car to a certified mechanic if you can't track down the problem. They have access to service manuals and more sophisticated testing devices.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you aren't in a position for the linkage, tires, wheels or engine components to grab your clothes or body.
