How to Troubleshoot the Air Conditioning in a VW Beetle

by Editorial Team

Automobile problems can be costly to diagnose and repair. Save time and money by trying to troubleshoot the problems yourself.

Step 1

Check the controls first. Make sure the air-recirculation button is not selected instead of the air conditioning. It may seem simple, but could prevent a trip to the dealership or a mechanic.

Step 2

Start the engine and turn on the air conditioning, adjusting from low to high. Listen for the accompanying sound to increase when turned on high. This is the blower fan.

Step 3

Replace the blower if it does not sound right. In a VW Beetle, the blower fan is located under the glove box.

Step 4

Carefully pry off the lower footwell trim panel, and find the blower motor on the lower right-hand side. It is black and cylindrical with a white fan attached. Unscrew the four screws holding it in place.

Step 5

Make sure the pilot lights inside the vehicle are working and the graphics display is lit. If these are not working correctly it might be the control panel or control cables.

Step 6

Find the control panel in a VW Beetle by removing the trim panel surrounding the air controls. Bring the three small control cables out from underneath the instrument panel. Unplug the cables from the back of the control panel, and unplug the electrical cable before removing it.

Step 7

Test the air conditioning controls to make sure they work properly, such as moving with right amount of resistance and stopping on the right places. If not, this will indicate a fuse problem. Find the fuse box in a VW Beetle by opening the drivers' door. The fuse box is directly behind the panel on the left side of the dashboard. Pry out the burnt fuse with a small pair of pliers. The fuse will be red and 10 amp.
