How to Replace a Brake Line in a Nissan Pathfinder

Contributor
By eHow Contributing Writer

Before you start taking your Nissan Pathfinder up the mountain trails, make sure the brake lines will hold up. Replacing the standard brake lines with stainless steel ones will make the brakes last longer and improve braking performance.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Brake fluid
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Tire iron
  • New brake lines
  • Line wrenches
  • Vinyl hose
  • Container

    Preparation

  1. Step 1

Remove the cap on the Pathfinder's master cylinder reservoir, located on the driver's side of the engine bay. Top off the brake fluid and replace the cap to reduce the amount of fluid lost during the replacement process.

  2. Step 2

Support the vehicle securely on jack stands. Remove the wheel to reach the first brake line.

  3. Step 3

Inspect the condition of the brake hose. It must be replaced as well if it's stretched, cracked or damaged in any way.

  4. Step 4

Observe the existing brake line. Bend the replacement line the same way as the old line to reduce the strain while driving.

  5. Replacement

  6. Step 1

Disconnect the bolts attaching the brake line to remove it. There should be two bolts on each connector, so use two line wrenches. Remove the end on the brake hose first.

  7. Step 2

Install the replacement line. Attach the end farthest from brake hose first to avoid stretching the hose. Tighten the bolts with the wrenches after applying them by hand.

  8. Step 3

Bleed the system of air. Open the caliper bleeder valve, attach a hose and place the end in a container with brake fluid. Have an assistant press the brake pedal to remove the air.

  9. Step 4

Attach the wheel and repeat the entire process for the other three ends. Test the brakes once you've replaced all the lines on your Pathfinder.
