How to Replace a Brake Line in a Lincoln Navigator

The Lincoln Navigator is a luxury SUV, so strengthening its essential parts can protect your investment. You could replace your Navigator's brake lines with stainless steel ones. However, only replace the section of the line directly connected to the caliper brake hose; other portions require a professional mechanic.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir. If you top it off and seal the cap tightly, it should reduce the amount of fluid lost during the replacement process.

    • 2

Raise and support the vehicle. While the Navigator should come with a jack stand that supports it, getting a stronger one from an auto parts store is even better. Remove the wheel to access the brake line and caliper.

    • 3

Observe the brake line. Bend the replacement line the same way as the old line to reduce the strain while driving.

    • 4

Disconnect the bolts attaching the brake line to remove it. There should be two bolts on each connector, so use two line wrenches. Remove the end on the brake hose first.

    • 5

Install the replacement line. Attach the end farthest from the brake hose first to avoid stretching the hose. Tighten the bolts with the wrenches after threading them by hand.

    • 6

Bleed the system of air. Open the caliper bleeder valve, attach a clear, vinyl tube to it and place the tube in a container half filled with brake fluid. Have an assistant press the brake pedal to remove the air.

    • 7

Attach the wheel and move to the wheel on the other side. Test the brakes once you've replaced all the lines.

Tips & Warnings

  • Inspect the brake hose and also replace it if it's showing signs of damage.

  • Purchase replacement brake lines specified for the Lincoln Navigator, and only from a reputable dealer.
