How to Clean the Front of the Radiator in a Hyundai Sonata
The core component of your Hyundai Sonata, your radiator, cools down the engine and protects it from overheating. When you drive, the cooling process pulls in air, which also causes leaves, insects, dirt and other debris to suck into the fins (vents) of the radiator and trap heat. Clean the front of the radiator in a Hyundai Sonata to prevent overheating. These steps apply to most model years.

1
Wait until your engine cools before you clean the radiator because you could damage a hot engine if cold water gets on it. In addition, a hot engine could burn you intensely. Furthermore, a heated engine means the radiator contains hot coolant under extreme pressure.
-
2
Raise your Sonata hood and secure it. See the rectangular-shaped radiator toward the front of the vehicle near the grille. This location goes for the 4-cylinder and DOHC V6 engines.

3
Loosen dead insects and other debris by dipping the nylon brush into the soapy water and scrubbing the front of the radiator gently. Put the brush between the grille and the radiator or directly through slots in the grille.
-
4
Use soft scrubbing motions in the direction of the fins. Rubbing against the direction of the delicate metal fins causes them to bend. Position your hose between the grille and the radiator or spray the radiator directly through the grille. Make sure the water is low since excessive pressure bends the fragile fins.

5
Cover the front of the radiator with gentle streams of water to rinse. Repeat this cleansing process every 12,000 miles or according to scheduled maintenance in your owner's manual.

Tips & Warnings
Find a long handle nylon brush to clean the hard-to-reach areas of the radiator. Use this brush to clean through the front grille too. You can remove the grille to clean the radiator front on some vehicles. In this case, work with a licensed mechanic to ensure proper grille removal and replacement. If your grille contains mesh wiring, clean between the grille and the radiator or contact a mechanic for assistance.
