The Chevy Impala is one of the most sold cars of all time. To drop the oil pan in the Impala, take all precautions necessary for a safe repair. The oil pan is often replaced if damaged or removed for cleaning. For the Chevy Impala models dated from 2000 through 2005, the process involves a few steps, especially for the 3.1L and 3.4L engines.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jack and jack stands
  • Oil drip pan
  • Wrench or socket set
  • Engine support fixture
  1. Step 1

Run the vehicle for at least 5 minutes to circulate the oil through the car. Turn off the vehicle and park on a flat, secure surface.

  2. Step 2

Jack up the vehicle using a jack and jack stands. Follow all warnings and usage directions provided by the manufacturers of the jack and jack stand.

  3. Step 3

Drain the oil from the engine by placing a drain pan under the oil drain plug, located under the car, between the tires. The drain plug is located on the oil pan, a rectangular shaped pan. Use a wrench to remove the plug, allowing the oil to spill into the pan.

  4. Step 4

Remove the negative battery cable, engine mount struts, drive belt and air conditioning compressor mounting bolts. Use a wrench to disconnect each of these, so you can gain access to the oil pan to remove it.

  5. Step 5

Place an engine support fixture under the vehicle for support. Follow the directions provided on the engine support fixture for proper installation. This will hold the engine in place as you remove the oil pan.

  6. Step 6

Disconnect the catalytic converter from the right exhaust manifold. Remove the oil level sensor electrical connection, the starter motor, the transaxle brace and mount lower nuts as well as the engine mount lower nuts. Remove each using a wrench and socket set.

  7. Step 7

Unscrew each of the 12 oil pan retaining bolts located around the edge of the oil pan. Support the pan with one hand while removing the bolts until the pan drops off.

Tips & Warnings
  • For the 3.5L engine, remove only the negative battery cable, the oil level sensor electrical connector, the oil filter cap and filter and the transaxle brace.
  • The removal of the oil pan on the Chevy Impala is complex, requiring the removal of many engine parts. Only experienced individuals with proper tools should attempt to remove the oil pan on this vehicle.
