Installing a basic alarm in the VW Jetta saves money on insurance and deters thieves looking for easy entry. Protecting the VW Jetta requires a working knowledge of car wiring and overall electrical systems. Alarms that are more complex can include remote start, motion detection and paging on capable alarm modules. Jetta models with power windows have different wiring than those without.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Alarm kit with vehicle wiring adapters
  • Screwdrivers
  • Zip ties
  • Drill
  1. Step 1

Remove the panel under the steering wheel of the Jetta by opening the small panel on the left side. Remove the screws and pull the panel out of the car. Snap out the kick panel on the left driver's side in front of the door. Pop the hood and remove the positive battery cable from the terminal.

  2. Step 2

Mount the siren in an open area of the engine bay. Face the siren toward the engine to limit water exposure when driving. Connect the alarm power wire to the positive battery cable and combine it with the siren wires. Pull the wires along the firewall and into the wire bundle entry in front of the steering wheel.

  3. Step 3

Place the alarm control module as far into the Jetta's dash as possible. The more difficult the module is to install, the more difficult it is for a thief to find. Attach the module to a heavy wire bundle with zip ties or drill into a cross brace and mount with screws.

  4. Step 4

Install the shock sensor in a location suggested by the manufacturer. Shock sensors vary greatly in how they work and where they are mounted.

  5. Step 5

Drill a hole in a visible location on the dash for the LED. Using dash push outs along the control panel works well. Run the LED wire back to the control module.

  6. Step 6

Find the door lock controller above the fuse box if the VW Jetta is so equipped. Snap in the power lock module and pull the wires to the control module. Locate the starter wire under the steering wheel and connect the start disable relay.

  7. Step 7

Connect the power, siren, shock sensor, door lock control and starter wire to the alarm control module. Reconnect the positive battery terminal and test the alarm. Adjust sensitivity as needed and replace the molding and trim.

Tips & Warnings
  • Installing an alarm system yourself saves money but is likely to void the vehicles warranty.
