How to Replace the Windshield Washer Reservoir in a Mitsubishi Eclipse. The Mitsubishi Eclipse, introduced in 1990, is a sporty compact car. Always keeping your car clean is a high priority in any sports car. Make sure you keep the windshield clean also, so you can see the road. That means filling your reservoir routinely and checking it for leaks. If you find a leak, decide if you can fix it or if you need to replace it.

Shop for a new windshield washer reservoir after finding the part number for your Mitsubishi Eclipse, which depends on the year of your car. See the Resources section for places to start your online search.

Select a level surface to work on your Mitsubishi Eclipse--be sure there's plenty of room. After putting your car in park, turn it off, put on the emergency brake and exit the car. With your right hand, reach in and pull the hood release.

Access the engine compartment by releasing the auxiliary release latch under the hood. Raise the hood until the hydraulic lift kicks in and opens it fully.

Find the windshield washer reservoir. The reservoir in the Mitsubishi Eclipse is the white-capped reservoir located near the front right corner. A waterspout is on the cap.

Pour fluid into the reservoir to locate the leak, and if it's small, you may be able to patch it, otherwise, replace the whole reservoir. Disconnect the battery's negative cable and wait 90 seconds before stating to work, if your Mitsubishi Eclipse is equipped with air bags.

Take out the reservoir by removing the three different nuts attached to the reservoir with a screwdriver. Then, disconnect the hose and any other leads and unscrew the tank. You should then be able to lift the reservoir out of your Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Remove the windshield washer pump with a pair of pliers. Attach the pump to the new windshield washer reservoir and screw the unit into the car to install it. Finally, replace the seals with new ones.

Reattach the hose and other leads including those attached to the electrical system. Screw in the three different nuts that attach the reservoir to your car.

Reconnect the negative battery cable in your Mitsubishi Eclipse and fill the new reservoir with windshield washer fluid.

Tips

Place a drain bucket below the reservoir to catch any washer solvent that may leak out. You can buy premixed windshield washer fluid--diluted window cleaner--or make your own by adding about three cups of window cleaner per one gallon of distilled water.

Warnings

Avoid frozen fluid in your windshield washer reservoir and your washer lines by using weather appropriate fluid in the wintertime that includes both cleaner and ice remover.
