Battery cables and battery terminals sometimes become loose or corroded. If the terminals of the cables appear badly deteriorated by corrosion or if the jaws of the terminals are touching, then you should replace the cables on your Kia Spectra. If you have to wiggle the cables to get your car started, then it's definitely time to replace the battery cables.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gloves
  • Box wrench or cable pliers
  • Wire brush or cable cleaner
  • Dry rag
  • Battery cables
  1. Step 1

Put on gloves and find the battery under the hood midway between the bumper and the inside wall on the driver's side of the Kia Spectra. There's a black cover over the battery, which must be removed by pulling it off before removing the battery cables.

  2. Step 2

Loosen the bolt on the black negative battery cable first with a box wrench or cable clamp pliers. Wriggle the cable end off the post. Repeat the process on the red positive cable. Take off both battery cables, even if you're replacing only one of them.

  3. Step 3

Follow the black negative cable to where it's grounded on the frame beneath the battery. Remove the end of the cable with the wrench. Track the red positive cable to its connection on the starter solenoid on the driver's side of the engine and remove it with the wrench.

  4. Step 4

Clean the posts with a small wire brush or cable cleaner. Wipe off any residual dust with a clean, dry cloth.

  5. Step 5

Attach the new positive cable first, reversing the process in Step 3. Put the negative cable on last and start the car to ensure the connections are working on your Kia Spectra.

Tips & Warnings
  • Tap the battery cable ends gently with a small hammer when removing them from the battery posts, if they're stuck. Too much force could damage the battery, so be careful.
  • When attaching the new cables, the cable clamps should fit properly without having to hammer them onto the posts, which can also damage your battery.
  • Never work on your battery while the car engine is running.
  • Never smoke while replacing your battery cables, as there may be fuel fumes in the engine compartment that could ignite.
