Replacing the taillights in a Saturn Ion is an easy project that requires a special screwdriver. Driving a Saturn Ion with a broken taillight is likely to lead to a ticket or worse, an accident. Swapping out the taillight in a Saturn Ion takes about 5 minutes and the right bulb and screwdriver.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • T-15 torx screwdriver
  • Standard 3457AST automotive bulb
  • Tissue or paper towel
  1. Step 1

Place the Saturn Ion in park and set the parking brake. Remove the keys to ensure the power to the electrical system is off.

  2. Step 2

Open the trunk and locate the plastic taillight assembly, and ensure you have clear access. Unscrew two torx bolts in the assembly with a T-15 torx screwdriver.

  3. Step 3

Pull the assembly free and tug gently on the harness until the bulb releases. Take care not to touch the glass of the new 3457AST bulb by covering it with a tissue or paper towel.

  4. Step 4

Push the new bulb into the harness until it snaps into place. Press the new bulb and harness into the taillight assembly.

  5. Step 5

Test the new bulb, brake light and turn signal to ensure they are working properly. Screw the plastic cover back in place and close the trunk.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always carry extra bulbs when traveling to ensure a replacement is available.
  • Consider upgrading to a brighter, longer lasting LED bulb. Always replace both bulbs when upgrading to ensure a uniform look for the car.
