The fuel filter in your Honda Prelude keeps the fuel in the fuel injection system clean, which prevents plugged fuel injectors or a plugged fuel pressure regulator. Some mechanics recommend changing your fuel filter every 30,000 to 40,000 miles. Follow these directions to replace a Honda Prelude fuel filter in less than 45 minutes.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shop towel
  • New fuel filter
  • New fuel filter gaskets
  1. Step 1

Put a shop towel around and under the fuel rail. Relieve the fuel system pressure by disconnecting the fuel pump module connector, then starting the engine and letting it run until it stalls. Turn the ignition off.

  2. Step 2

Obtain the code number if the radio in your Honda Prelude contains a coded theft protection circuit. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the banjo bolt and the fuel feed pipe from the fuel filter. Loosen the fuel filter clamp and remove the fuel filter. Thoroughly clean the fuel fittings.

  3. Step 3

Place the new fuel filter in the bracket and put on the filter clamp. Tighten bolts on the clamp to 84 in-lbs. Connect the fuel feed pipe to the filter and tighten its fittings to 28 ft-lbs.

  4. Step 4

Connect the fuel outlet pipe to the filter and be sure to use new gaskets around the fitting. Tighten the banjo bolt to 20 ft-lbs. Reconnect the negative battery cable and then enter the radio security code, if applicable.

  5. Step 5

Turn on the ignition and check for fuel leaks. If your Honda Prelude has four-wheel steering, start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock. This will reset the four-wheel steering control unit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not disconnect the fuel lines until you let the pressure out of the fuel system.
  • Before starting your Honda Prelude, be sure to wipe up any fuel that may have spilled while replacing the fuel filter.
