Power steering comes as a standard feature in all Mercury Villager vehicles, from 1993 up to the final 2002 model. Basic at home maintenance is simple to perform for your Mercury Villager, and can help prolong vehicle life. If you buy a used Mercury Villager, be sure to find out about parts in the power steering system that have been fixed or replaced and may change your maintenance schedule.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Power steering fluid
  1. Step 1

Check the power steering fluid and other fluids in your Mercury Villager every 30,000 miles, or sooner if you experience difficulty steering or suspect that fluid is leaking.

  2. Step 2

Park your Mercury Villager on a level surface and allow the engine to cool before you check power steering fluid levels. An inclined surface or warm fluid will result in an inaccurate fluid level reading.

  3. Step 3

Locate your power steering fluid reservoir in the engine department. The power steering fluid reservoir should be clearly labeled, as are the level markings on the outside of the reservoir.

  4. Step 4

Check that the power steering fluid is above the low level mark and add Mercury approved fluid if necessary. Take care not to add fluid above the maximum level mark and drain excess fluid by detaching the hose at the bottom of the reservoir.

  5. Step 5

Inspect the reservoir and surrounding power steering system components for worn or damaged parts that may result in fluid leaking into the engine. Replace any faulty parts immediately to avoid damage to your vehicle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your Mercury Villager in for service if you are having to refill the power steering fluid sooner than 65,000 or 70,000 miles, or if you have to add power steering fluid very frequently, since you likely have a leak in the system.
