How to Do the Reclining Pigeon Pose in Yoga

The Pigeon is a hip-opening pose that also stretches the thighs and groin. It is a basic pose that is often practiced as part of the floor series during a yoga class or home session. The Reclining Pigeon is a restorative version of the pose that is a helpful introduction to performing the classic version if you are a beginning yogini or have exceptionally tight hips or thighs.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yoga mat
  • Comfortable clothing
  1. Step 1

    Lie on your back.

  2. Step 2

    Bend your knees and place the soles of your feet on the mat.

  3. Step 3

    Cross your right ankle over your left knee.

  4. Step 4

    Place your right arm between your legs and wrap your left arm around your left knee to grab hold of your knee. Many yoga teachers will refer to this as “threading the needle.”

  5. Step 5

    Draw your left knee towards your chest.

  6. Step 6

    Hold the pose for five to 10 breaths.

  7. Step 7

    Switch sides.
