House training a puppy can be easy. Patience is key and learning to read your puppy's body language helps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • cute puppy ...of course
  • patience
  • small puppy treats
  • crate (for night)
  1. Step 1

When you have brought home your new puppy, make sure you take him/her outside as much as possible. Take your puppy outside every half hour to 45 minutes. It may sound like a bit much, but this helps your puppy develop habits you desire. Every time your puppy goes potty, praise him/her with petting or a very small training treat, then immediately bring your puppy inside. Don't let your puppy play, romp, roll ... this is letting the puppy know that outside time means potty time.

  2. Step 2

Sometimes it helps to keep your puppy on a leash when brought outside, that way he/she wont be distracted and overwhelmed by open space and running around. It's very important that you hold up your end of the deal by maintaining a good schedule to take your puppy outside. Puppies and dogs love routines, so this is where patience comes in handy.

  3. Step 3

When inside, your constantly observing your puppy anyway, so look for signs that your puppy might have to go potty. In general puppies will sniff the ground, circle, pace and possibly whimper when they have to go potty. As soon as you see any of this body language, tell your puppy, "let's go OUTSIDE", and take him/ her outside. It also helps to take your puppy outside immediately after a meal.

  4. Step 4

When it's time for bed place your puppy in a crate, no bigger than the space he/she needs to lie down. Puppies won't potty where they sleep, and they don't want to lay in it. However it is your responsibility to frequently take your puppy outside in the middle of the night. Remember that puppies can't hold their bladder/bowels very long, so help ease their mind and let them know they can have frequent trips outside. Pretty soon you and your puppy will be on a good schedule.

Tips & Warnings
  • It always helps to have teamwork: alternate shifts between siblings ,husband, wife, etc.
  • Have patience and stick with it: it's always easier to walk outside than clean up a mess inside.
  • House training is also a good bonding time, a good way to connect with your new puppy
