Make Electronic Music

The genre of electronic music started as an underground movement, but has built a following over the years that supports an avant-garde culture. Electronic music has allowed millions to add their creativity to the mix without spending years to study an instrument first.

Create a driving beat. The core of electronic music is a well-defined four/four beat. Drum programming sets the tone for the song by looping a continuous thump throughout the composition. Electronic music has gained commercial success by playing on the driving beat and infusing pop lyrics into a song with simple chords. "Finally" by Ce Ce Penniston would be a good example of electronic influences in mainstream music.

Join an electronic music community. This can be online or at the meeting place of the local underground music scene in town. Message boards provide an opportunity to gain ideas and try new things with an audience that is open to this genre of music. Local clubs that attract electronic music fans often have regulars that form alliances and can become partners in the creation of electronic music.

Add layers to the driving beat mentioned in Step 1. This is a technique that often separates the sound of one artist from another. Some artists introduce rock elements like whirling guitars while others layer their sound with R&B elements. This all depends on the style and experimental nature of the artist. Treat the song like a cake with layers and icing made up of different sounds.

Compose a simple hook. Electronic music is the combination of several simple musical components. The end result is an entirely new creation of beats and music. Electronic music is not a genre whose songs typically have thought-provoking lyrics. Some artists, like Madonna, have used electronic music as a vehicle for "message" songs. Regardless of the tone, simple hooks are a key element to keep the song moving for its core audience. Strong, soulful voices work well in hooks, but being creative with a hook style will pay off in the end.

Borrow from other genres. Electronic music can spill over into many other genres. This is because electronic artists easily borrow from other genres to make the electronic sound. Rock, blues, R&B and even gospel music can infuse the electronic sound and create a new musical landscape.
