The clinch knot is one of the most widely tied knots. For many children, this is the first knot learned. Use this knot when attaching hooks, lures or swivels. Though the clinch knot is easily tied, it will hold about 90 percent of the line's strength. This is a great option when you are doing some freshwater fishing. Pass this knowledge on to a child. You'll see the wonder and accomplishment in his eyes when he soon masters this seemingly difficult task.

Instructions

Run the fishing line through the eye of the hook or lure. Double back about 5 to 6 inches of line. This should facilitate the tying of the knot. See Illustration 1.

Grab the tag end and twist around the standing line. Make 5 twists. Run the tag end back through the loop just above the hook eye. Use the thumb and forefinger of your left hand to pinch the line just above the eyelet. This should help secure the line while the twists are made. See illustration 2.

  3. Step 3

Pull the tag end and the fishing line in opposite directions to snug down the knot. As the knot tightens, pay attention to the coils of line. Make sure they sit next to each other. They should never be on top of the other coils.

  4. Step 4

After the knot is snugged down and tight, trim the tag end flush with the knot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Moistening the knot will help the line to tighten smoothly.
  • Always wear eye protection and use caution when working with hooks.
