How to Feed a Baby With Acid Reflux

Acid reflux, also called gastro esophageal reflux or heartburn, is a fairly common condition in babies. Acid reflux is caused when the muscles that separate the stomach from the esophagus aren't yet matured, so formula, breast milk or food is regurgitated back into the esophagus, causing irritation, excessive spitting up, tummy pain and discomfort. To feed a baby that is suffering from acid reflux, follow these steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed your baby upright and keep him sitting up after feeding. This will allow gravity to keep the food in the stomach. Sitting a baby on your lap against your chest is great way to feed a baby with reflux.

    • 2

Breastfeed your baby. Breast milk is easier to digest than formula and can help to minimize reflux. If you must feed formula, opt for a hypo-allergenic formula or formula for sensitive babies.

    • 3

Elevate your baby's crib mattress to about 30 degrees. If your baby isn't sleeping well, making this adjustment can help keep his food down.

    • 4

Feed your baby less, but more often. Offer smaller amounts more frequently to help minimize acid reflux. Limiting the amount of food can help speed up digestion and help to lessen the possibility of regurgitation.

    • 5

Talk to your child's pediatrician. Your child's doctor may be able to prescribe medication to help with acid reflux.

Tips & Warnings
