Check class syllabuses. The class syllabus is an invaluable tool. Most instructors will include a schedule that details what will be covered in the course and what you will do each week. A quick glance at the syllabus for each class should give you an idea of how to work ahead on your college courses.

Devote more time to assignments. During the first few weeks of the semester, you will need to devote more time to your college courses. This time will be spent working ahead as far as possible. While it will be impossible to finish all your work in a few weeks, you can get far enough ahead to be able to take a break when you need to.

Read chapters outlined in the syllabus. Most syllabuses will tell you which chapters will be covered. A great way to work ahead is to simply take the time to read the material. Even if you aren’t sure what the assignment will be, you’ll be better prepared. As soon as you know what is expected, you can complete the work quickly.

Pay attention to how the course proceeds. Many college courses have a pattern. An instructor will usually require you to do the same work for each chapter. For example, an instructor may request that you read the chapter and answer the review questions. If this happens for the first few weeks, you can almost guarantee that this will be how future chapters will be handled.

Ask professors about future assignments. If you’re unsure of what lies ahead, ask. Your instructor should be more than happy to tell you about upcoming assignments. They will also be pleased that you’re showing such interest in the course.
