Things You'll Need:
- Slicker brush
- Comb
- Grooming brush
- Cat treats

Step 1
Thoroughly brush her coat at least two or three times a week. Most pet supply stores will have a variety of grooming brushes in stock. When grooming your Maine Coon cat, you should use at least two brushes: a regular brush and a slicker brush. A standard-issue brush will help remove dirt from your cat’s fur; a slicker brush will help add shine and make your cat’s fur look great.
-
Step 2
Make it an enjoyable experience for your cat. Some Maine Coon cats love to be brushed. They will preen and purr as you pull a comb through their fur. But other cats may not enjoy the experience that much. If you cat does not like to be brushed, purchase kitty treats and toys. Use these to distract her while you gently brush her.

Step 3
Remove knots in her fur. You may need two people to do this. One should distract the cat with kitty treats or a play toy; the other should have a pair of sharp scissors on hand and a detangling comb to find the knots. Use the detangling comb to isolate the knots, and use the scissors to gently cut them. Be very careful not to get too close to the cat’s skin or you may nick her delicate hide.

Step 4
Consider a visit to a professional groomer or a vet if you cannot get the knots out of your cat’s fur. The groomer or the vet may have to shave the cat to get the knots out. This should not be a concern, as the cat’s fur will grow right back.
