How to Replace the Distributor in a Nissan Maxima

With the Nissan Maxima, engine models contained distributors until the 2005 models, when they went to a distributorless system. From 1993 to 2004, the Nissan Maxima models contained both distributor and distributorless systems. If you have a 1.6L, 2.0L or 2.4L engine prior to 2005, here's how to replace the distributor. You don't need to buy any special tools.

• Nissan Maxima distributor

Instructions

Removing the Distributor

1. Identify the distributor on your Nissan Maxima by the cables running to it from the spark plugs. The distributor is on the engine block and access should be easy.

2. Ensure your engine is on Top Dead Center (TDC) and that the No. 1 piston is on compression stroke. These two elements are essential if you want the engine to work properly when you install a new distributor.

3. Pull the spark plug wires from the distributor cap and disconnect the negative cable leading to the battery. Find the battery on the driver's side near the front grille.

4. Mark the engine block to indicate the distributor and rotor positions, and then remove the distributor cap.

5. Unscrew wiring connections from the distributor with a screwdriver.

6. Remove the bolt or bolts that hold the distributor in the engine, using a ratchet or wrench. The number of bolts varies depending on the year of the vehicle.

7. Lift the distributor up and out of the cylinder block.

Replacing the Distributor

1. Put in a new distributor housing O-ring, lightly greased, before installing the new distributor. You have to buy the O-ring separately.

2. Install the new distributor for your Nissan Maxima, lining up the rotor with the mark on the housing. The part number from Nissan is 22100-85E02RE or 22100-16E03RE, depending on the year. Know the year and engine size of your vehicle when ordering.

3. Seat the distributor snugly in the housing and check that the distributor gear is fully engaged.

4. Tighten the hold-down bolt with a wrench or ratchet.

5. Reattach the distributor pick-up lead wires with a screwdriver. Also replace the distributor cap with screws. Push on the spark plug wires and connect the negative cable to the battery.

6. Use a wrench to tighten the hold-down bolt or bolts on your engine.

Tips & Warnings

• Avoid moving the camshaft or crankshaft position when removing the distributor. If you do, you will have to find TDC on cylinder No. 1 again prior to putting in the new distributor.
