How to Replace a Wheel Stud in a Toyota Camry
When the wheel stud strips and the wheel nuts don't tighten down, you need to replace the wheel studs in your Toyota Camry. Sometimes they break off when you change a tire, or sheer if you hit something at just the right angle. The fix-it job can't wait and you can do it yourself with the right tools and a little bull strength.
Things You'll Need
- Jack, lug wrench and jack tools
- Blocks
- Replacement stud
- Vise-grips
- Open end wrench
- Crescent wrench
- Dead blow hammer or heavy mallet
- Extra wheel bolts and wheel nuts
- Impact wrench (if available) or 1/2-inch long handled drive socket wrench

1
Purchase a new wheel stud the same size as the old stud on your Camry. If you don't know the size, wait until you remove it and take it to the store with you to ensure that you get the right one.
-
2
Locate the jack and jack tools. If you need to change the tire, get the jack and spare from the trunk. You have to remove the floor cover in order to access both of them.

3
Jack up your Camry and remove the tire. Make sure that you block the tire that is diagonal to the placement of the jack.
-
4
Take off the brake assembly. If the wheel is in the back, you need to remove the emergency cable and assembly. If you have drum not disc brakes, remove these also. You may need to remove the hub with drum brakes and use a vise to get the stud out.
-
5
Examine the back of the hub for an open space that gives you more access to remove and replace the stud. Make sure the stud lines up with the opening.
-
6
Hit the stud with the mallet so it pushes backward through the opening. Once it's through, slide the new wheel stud in to the space to replace it. Push the stud in from the back.
-
7
Place two wheel bolts on the stud on the end closest to you. The angled edges face out. Tighten these down and as you do, notice how they pull the stud through the hole. Keep tightening until the stud sits flat against the hub in the back. Finish replacing the stud on your Toyota Camry by putting all the parts back on the wheel in the exact order you took them off.
