Things You'll Need:
- Flathead screwdriver
- Hoist or creeper
- Flashlight
- Hammer
-
Step 1
Raise the hood and locate the exhaust manifold under a cover behind the engine block. Remove the cover with a flathead screwdriver and check the bolts and gaskets holding the three tubular pipes to the van. Make sure they are secure. Look for moisture buildup or cracks on the manifold. Replace the cover.
-
Step 2
Lift the minivan on a hoist or hydraulic lift to safely get under the car to inspect the entire exhaust system. You should be able to use a creeper to slide under the van if you prefer.
-
Step 3
Shine a flashlight up from under the van to inspect the gaskets and bolts on the undersides of the manifolds. Use the light to look at all the other parts of the exhaust, including the catalytic converter, muffler and tailpipe. Check all the connections.
-
Step 4
Run your hand over the entire exhaust system to feel for holes, cracks, rust or loose connections, especially if you heard telltale noises when the Caravan was idling. Tap gently with a hammer along each piece to locate any weak sections.
-
Step 5
Feel the hangers and clamps to make sure they're securely in place and not rattling around.
-
Step 6
Lower the van or slide out from under it after you've examined the exhaust system.
