How to Replace the Alternator in a Dodge Durango

The Dodge Durango uses an alternator to run electrical devices in your vehicle while the engine is running. A voltage regulator ensures the voltage level remains constant and is usually part of the alternator assembly. You may need to replace the alternator if your battery continually runs down or your headlights become dimmer while the engine is running.

      Determine which alternator your Dodge Durango will need. You'll want to be sure the new alternator is compatible with your Durango's engine. Models made from 1998 to 2003 have a 4.7 L PowerTech, 5.2 L Magnum, or 5.9 L Magnum. Models made after 2004 will have a 3.7 L Powertech, 4.7 L Powertech or 5.7 L Hemi.

      Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Remove the accessory drive belt and the electrical connections to the alternator.

      Remove the mounting bolts on the alternator with a socket wrench and take the alternator off the vehicle. There will be a vertical bolt, a short horizontal bolt and long horizontal bolt for 3.7 L and 4.7 L engines. The three bolts will be the same on other engine sizes.

      Install the new alternator assembly. Tighten the vertical mounting bolt and long horizontal bolt to 40 ft. lbs, and the short horizontal bolt to 55 foot pounds. if you have a 3.7 or 4.7 L engine. Torque the mounting bolts to 30 foot pounds for all other engine sizes. Connect the electrical harness to the alternator.

      Replace the accessory drive belt and the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.
