How to Install a Car Alarm in a Mercury Cougar
Installing an alarm in the Mercury Cougar gives you piece of mind and lower insurance rates. Mercury Cougar models made after 1999 require the addition of a passlock bypass module and a working knowledge of car electrical systems. Putting an alarm in the Mercury Cougar takes basic tools and about 2 hours.

Open the alarm kit and read the manual carefully. Pop the hood and remove the positive battery cable. Connect the alarm's power wire to the positive cable and run the wire along the firewall to the driver side.

Install the alarm siren in an open area of the engine bay with the horn facing the engine to limit water exposure when driving. Run the wires to the driver side of the firewall and feed all of the wires through an existing hole and into the cabin.

Connect the passlock bypass module per the manufacturer's instructions if needed. Mount the alarm control module as far into the dash as possible by securing it to an existing wire bundle with zip ties.

Find the power door lock relay, if the car is equipped, and connect the alarm's power lock module. Locate the starter wire in the ignition wiring bundle coming from the steering column. Attach the start disable relay and run the wire to the control module.

Drill a small hole in a visible location for the LED light. Snap the LED into place and connect the all of the remaining wires to the control module.

Reconnect the positive battery cable and test the alarm. Adjust the alarm's sensitivity on the Mercury Cougar as needed and secure any loose wires with zip ties.
