Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Camera
  • Sunscreen
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Gear for your choice of outdoor activities
  1. Step 1

Book a room at one of the many hotels or motels that lie between Stateline (Highway 50) and Lake Tahoe. Most of these accommodations will be on Park or Manzanita Avenues, Highway 50 or Lake Tahoe Boulevard. When booking in the summer months, be sure to inquire about passes to the local private beach.

  2. Step 2

Eat breakfast at the Lakeside Beach Grill, a restaurant that is just steps from the water. Since the restaurant is close to the beach, it is a good idea to bring your bathing suit.

  3. Step 3

Show your private beach passes at the gate and enter the beach. Rent water bikes, kayaks or jet skis if you please, or simply lounge around in the sun and water. If the water level is high enough, kids can enjoy swimming out to a platform that they can jump off. There are also two playgrounds in the vicinity.

  4. Step 4

Go back to your hotel and clean up after spending time at the beach. Walk along Highway 50--it's not so much a highway as it is a major street. Stop along the many gift shops that line Highway 50.

  5. Step 5

Walk over to The Shops at Heavenly Village. Visit the many art galleries, such as the Sun Art Gallery, the Untamed Art Gallery and Wyland Galleries. You'll also find plenty of clothing stores selling outerwear and traditional Native American clothing. Visit the Wines on the Lake shop to pick up a few gifts for friends back home.

  6. Step 6

Buy tickets to the gondola ride at the Heavenly Valley Ski Resort. From the top you can see most of Lake Tahoe.

  7. Step 7

Rent bikes at the many outlets along Highway 50. You can then head down the highway to Camp Pendleton or to more shopping at the "Y" or to the Lakeside Marina. You could also choose to head up the highway through the casino area and to Zephyr Cove.

  8. Step 8

Have dinner at one of the many steak houses inside the casinos, such as the Sage Room Steak House at Harvey's, Friday's Station Steak & Seafood Grill at Harrah's, Ciera at Mont Bleu, Josh's at the Horizon or the Timber House Restaurant at the Lakeside Inn, if you're looking for prime rib on a budget.

  9. Step 9

Spend the rest of your night gambling, enjoying discount drinks or visiting one of the many lounges and clubs. For kids, Harvey's and Harrah's offer large, state-of-the-art arcades that provide hours of entertainment.

Tips & Warnings
  • These suggestions are only for the actual city of South Lake Tahoe. There are many other activities and places to see right outside the city limits.
  • The weather can change easily in South Lake Tahoe.
  • Wintertime in Tahoe provides a lot of outdoor activities as well. Skiing and snowboarding are extremely popular activities in Tahoe, which boasts some of the best ski resorts in the West. Cross-country skiing is also a popular pastime.
  • Be careful when engaging in strenuous activities in the high Sierras. The altitude is much higher than most people are used to, and this can affect their blood pressure and equilibrium. The same is true when you are drinking. Alcohol affects many people differently in higher altitudes.
