How to Make a Climbing Harness
A climbing harness is an essential piece of rock-climbing equipment. The harness is used to make sure that the individual is secure while he is climbing. The harness does not have to be elaborate; it just needs to be secure. If you cannot find the harness you want in a retail store, it is possible to make your own, saving some money and still ensuring you are secure in the long run.

1
Take the 20-foot length of webbing and tie two fixed loops into it. The loops should be approximately 6 inches apart. Webbing can be made from several different types of materials. A couple of good choices are Nylon webbing or webbing using 600D Polyester.
-
2
Adjust the loop size, using an overhand knot, so that the webbing fits around your thighs snugly. Tie the loops into the off center of the sling. This is done so that the remaining ends will not all be the same length. The short end should be around 4 feet long.

3
Slip your feet into the loops, making sure the knots are in the front.
-
4
Wrap the short end of the webbing around your waist. Hold the short end of the webbing in place on your hip. The webbing should be kept flat and not twisted or knotted. If the webbing is twisted, the climbing harness can become unsafe.
-
5
Wrap the long end of the webbing around your waist two to three times in the opposite direction than you wrapped the short end. The long end of the webbing should finish up at the same place as the short end.
-
6
Grasp both ends to be able to adjust the wraps around the waist. It should fit snugly. Again, your safety depends on the fact that the harness is secure and fits securely; do not skip this step.
-
7
Tie the ends off with either a square knot or a water knot. You will have completed your climbing harness using webbing.
