How to Do the Hapkido Collar Grab Defense

The hapkido collar grab defense is a way to immobilize an attacker who grabs you by the collar. It works regardless of whether the attacker grabs you from the front, back or side. The technique requires you to reach around the attacker's arm and apply torque to his shoulder. This is incredibly effective on opponents who are about the same size as you. It is somewhat less effective on attackers who are significantly taller or shorter than you.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Turn your body so that you are standing sideways to the attacker and you are both facing the same way. (If you both decided to start walking, you would head in the same direction.) If the attacker is in front of you, turn away from the arm he is grabbing you with. If the attacker is behind you, turn toward the inside of his grabbing arm. If the attacker grabs your collar from the side and you are facing the same way, you are already in position.

  2. Step 2

Whip your arm that is closest to the attacker in a large circle. Do this by first moving your arm up and forward, then back and past your head, then around and up again. Do this in one fluid and very fast motion. You are circling the attacker's arm with yours from front to back to front again.

  3. Step 3

Meet the attacker's arm above her elbow and crank your arm straight up. Do this hard and as high into the sky as you can. The attacker should still be holding on to your collar. This will trap her arm in a very uncomfortable position. When you shoot your arm skyward, it pushes her elbow up. Since her hand is trapped, all the torque is applied to her shoulder. The attacker will rise to her toes and scream in pain when you do this.

  4. Step 4

Pivot on your foot that is closest to the attacker. Turn your body toward him and step behind his legs with your other foot. You should now be facing the attacker.

  5. Step 5

Use your momentum from swinging around to face the attacker and thump her hard in the middle of the chest with your other arm. She will already be on her toes from the pain of the shoulder torque. Since your foot is behind her legs, the thump on the chest will drive her backward to the ground.

  6. Step 6

Let go of the shoulder torque as the attacker falls backward. He will be so stunned by what just happened that you can do whatever you want.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cranking a person's shoulder can tear muscles, tendons and ligaments. Practice this technique slowly and carefully so you don't hurt your partner.
