Things You'll Need:
- 4 4-by-4 posts
- Saw
- Drill
- Drill bits
- Bolts
- 4 2-by-4’s
- Twin mattress
- Piece of plywood
-
Step 1
Measure the mattress that you will be placing in the bed. Make the bed frame about 1 inch wider and longer than the mattress you will be placing on the bed. This is done so that you can put the sheets on easier. After you have measured the mattress, cut your 2-by-4’s to the length of your choice and the 4 2-by-4’s the width of your choice. This will give you the outer support you will need for the top bunk.
-
Step 2
Set up one of your 4-by-4 posts and make a pilot hole through both the 4-by-4 and the 2-by-4's. Next, insert your bolts through both pieces and place the washers on both sides and finish by tightening them down as tight as you can get it. This process will be performed on all sides both length and width. The tighter you get the nuts, the more secure your bed will be.
-
Step 3
Secure. After you have the outer frame secure and in place, you can now build the inside of the bed where the mattress will fit. Cut the 2-by-4's lengthwise and place them about every 6 inches. These boards should fit in very tightly, and you may need to use a hammer to get them into place. After you have all of the boards in place, drill some small pilot holes where you can screw in the wood screws. Place about 3 wood screws in each 2-by-4. Complete this process on both sides of the bed.
-
Step 4
After you have the support in place, cut a piece of plywood that will fit down into the inner support for the mattress. This will help keep your mattress from rubbing against the 2-by-4's and possibly ripping your mattress. The plywood should be cut about an inch smaller on all four corners. After you have the plywood in place, set the mattress down into the frame.
