How to Create a Flapper Costume

"Flapper" was a title given to young, modern girls in the 1920s who defied tradition and social pressures in order to adhere to a new trend. Wearing short skirts and bobbed hair was something that marked and differentiated a flapper from other girls of the time period. Being a rebel and indulging in some wild jazz dancing also tended to seal the deal for a flapper image. While this identity was frowned on by society at large, it has since become a nostalgic, idealized existence, an expression of freedom that many long for today. In a day and age when normalcy seems to be the way to rebel, the flapper mystique allows one to have fun with a wild woman image on Halloween or for any masquerade party.

Instructions

    • 1

Watch old movies that feature flappers. "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "Splendor in the Grass" will be particularly helpful.

    • 2

Bob your hair. Well, you don't have to go that far. A bobbed wig is a must, though, if you are unwilling to sacrifice your personal hairdo for a one-night costume. Short hair styled in the classic bob is a definitive look for any self-respecting flapper.

    • 3

Put on lots of makeup. Get yourself really dolled up. While you do not have to go for a "sleazy" look, it should be very clear that there is nothing understated about the makeup job. You are intentionally dolling yourself up for a night on the town. Dark eye makeup and red lipstick should both come into play.

    • 4

Slip into a slip. This is going to be an essential part of your costume. It should be made to fit a flapper dress of your own. Since your dress will be flying here and there as you dance, having a reliable slip is an essential part of remaining a lady even as you indulge in some flapper fun.

    • 5

Choose a sleeveless dress with a short hem. It should be low-waisted or straight. It should hang loosely to allow for easy dancing (and showing off of the knees). Powder your knees with a bit of blush after putting on the dress. Flappers did this occasionally. It accentuated the knees when flappers danced since dresses generally would fly up frequently to reveal a bit of knee and upper leg.

    • 6

Grab a cigarette (or faux cigarette), and put it in a fancy cigarette holder. While you should avoid actually ever smoking in costume, this is a proper prop for a true flapper. Think of yourself as a historic flapper. While you enjoy dancing in jazz saloons, smoking helps to ease nerves, pass the time and calm your spirit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Study the language of the flapper. Yes, flappers developed slang in order to keep up with things and keep it real (and to impress themselves, most likely). For instance, call a man a "snugglepup" if he is an affectionate dude who's asking for it. While this can be a strong word, it probably will just create a laugh or acknowledgment at a part. People aren't so up on their flapper slang these days!

  • Don't forget your slip. When you are dancing as a flapper, fabric flies all over the place. Wearing a slip can help preserve your modesty.
