How to Choose a Pet Shelter for Donations

  1. Step 1

Choose a no-kill shelter. Shelters that euthanize pets, don’t give homeless animals the chance they need. Some shelters give animals only a few hours before putting them to sleep. Making donations to these types of organizations only helps promote these practices. Instead, choose a shelter that gives animals the chance they need to overcome being abandoned or even abused.

  2. Step 2

Select a non-profit shelter. A non-profit shelter usually cares more about the animals than wages. This means that many of the employees who work in the organization are volunteers. These are fellow pet lovers doing what they can to find good homes for the animals.

  3. Step 3

Visit the shelter. If you want to make sure your donations will be put to good use, pay them a visit. The trip will give you a chance to see how pets are treated. You’ll also have a better understanding of how badly the organization needs your help.

  4. Step 4

Find a shelter that spends time getting the word out about their organization. Shelters should do everything they can to get their pets adopted. This may mean setting up at local events or taking pets to a local place one a week. Other organizations may put ads in the paper with a list of available pets.

  5. Step 5

Donate to a shelter that offers foster care. An organization that offers foster care opens themselves up to more homeless animals. A shelter only has so much space. Foster homes allow organizations to take in animals that would otherwise be turned away.

  6. Step 6

Give to an organization that uses its money wisely. If you’re interested in how an organization uses its funds, talk to the staff. Ask them what they need and how they spend donations. A quick chat should give you the information you need to make the right decision about donations.

Tips & Warnings
  • A good organization will take time to rehabilitate animals that may be violent due to abuse.
  • It’s always a good idea to ask what a shelter needs, rather than guessing.
  • It may take more than one trip to a shelter to determine how animals are treated and how funds are used.
