1. Decide where you will do your work. Will you be working from your home or from your clients' homes, or both? Take stock of the tools you'll need to do the job. Do you have a water hose and adequate room? Make sure that wherever you choose to work you have all the necessary equipment.

2. Purchase your supplies. Try to buy in bulk whenever possible to take advantage of wholesale prices. Use products that you are already familiar with and feel satisfied with their results. Save your receipts to help you keep track of your expenses. Keep them separately from other receipts and paperwork.

3. Decide on your prices and make out a price list. Doing this helps your customers see what they are paying for. Spend some time working out the costs that you put into washing each car such as buying the soaps, rags and water. Add that figure to the hourly rate that you are paying yourself. This gives you a good starting point when determining your prices.

4. Advertise your services. Make flyers to hang around town and place on windshields. Approach car lots about your services and give them a discounted rate for repeat business. Place a small ad in your local newspaper for your services.
