How to Bring a Bike on a DC Metro Train

Bicycles are allowed on the Washington, D.C., Metro trains, but there are some restrictions. Commuters can only bring bikes at certain times and may only use approved entrances. By following these guidelines, you can bring your bike on the Metro.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the elevator. Even though most people use escalators to get into the Metro, people with bikes are asked to use the elevator.

    • 2

Look around for other bicycles. The Metro only allows two bicycles per train car.

    • 3

Know the time. Bikes are not allowed on the Metro at all during rush hour. Those times are 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.

    • 4

Pay attention to holidays. Bicycles are not allowed on the Metro during holidays and when the Metro may be busy because of other special events.

    • 5

Enter the train through the side doors. There are three doors on each Metro train car. People with bikes are asked to stay near the ends of the train.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Metro only allowed standard bikes on trains--no tricycles or bikes with training wheels are allowed.

  • In case of an evacuation, place your bike between empty Metro seats and get off the train. Make sure your bike doesn't block any exits.
