Fish sometimes inhale bait and often swallow the hook, making removal of it nearly impossible. There are a lot of different items available on the market today to assist in hook removal, but this technique can be used anytime without the need for another tool to carry with you.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8-inch long, 1/4-inch thick fresh green stick
  1. Step 1

Hang onto the fishing line, and insert the stick 1.5 to 2 inches into the fish's mouth. The larger the fish, the further inside you will need to insert the stick.

  2. Step 2

Keep the line and stick together while maintaining a taught line. This is important to maintain a proper positioning of the stick in the fish's mouth.

  3. Step 3

Spin the stick in a circular motion and the hook will come out and the fish will be released.

Tips & Warnings
  • This technique is not recommended for use on large fish, although it will work. If your intent is to return the fish to the water, cut your line, as a fish can dissolve a fish hook fairly quickly without permanent damage to the fish.
