Your summer wardrobe doesn’t need to be fully packed away just because the air is getting a little chill. You can keep the summer vibe going when the season slinks onward when you wear summer fashions in the fall. This does not mean you should don your sandals on a frigid October night, but it does mean mixing some sunshiny garb into your fall fare. Several tricks and tips will help you wear summer fashions in the fall.

Things You'll Need:

  • Summer skirts, dresses, tops
  • Fall pants, suits, tights, accessories
  1. Step 1

Stylize a sundress. Instead of bare legs and flip flops, pair your favorite sundress with opaque tights, boots and a jean jacket.

  2. Step 2

Fall forward with flowing tops. You can stick with your summer shirts if you throw them under a wool or corduroy vest. Pull on some jeans and you’re good to go.

  3. Step 3

Skirt the issue. Keep the summer skirts alive by warming them up with wool tights and a cozy sweater. Boots or clunky shoes top off this look.

  4. Step 4

Get tanked. Your summer camisoles and tank tops will wear well beneath a fine fall blazer. You can also use them instead of the ho-hum dress shirt with an autumn suit.

  5. Step 5

Accessorize for autumn. Your summer accessories should be packed away for the season, or you may simply appear confused. Pair fall fashions, and summer fashions worn in fall, with clunky, heavier jewelry. Thick gold or silver works well, as do darker colors and heavier styles.

  6. Step 6

Keep an eye on color. Your bright summer fashions can still be a go as long as you pair them with darker fall colors. Rust, deep greens, browns, grays and sienna are smashing in the autumn. Those hues are equally as smashing paired with the bright summer colors of the same color family.

Tips & Warnings
  • Test tank tops under blazers before wearing them all day to make sure the blazers are not itchy wool and need long sleeves underneath.
  • Get rid of the straw hat and bright, flowery scarves. Top off your look with a wool cap, fedora and deeper silk scarf instead.
  • Don’t pair frilly, open-toed summer sandals with thick wool tights no matter what fashion magazines may say.
