Things You'll Need:

  • Pen and paper
  1. Step 1

Determine the reason you want to become financially free - Do you have a dream that you want to achieve? Would you like to spend more time with your friends and family? If you do not have a good reason, you will (most likely) never achieve your goals.

  2. Step 2

Begin with the end in mind - Think about where you want to be financially. Teach yourself to think positive thoughts and steer your behaviors in the direction you want to go. Once you have trained your mind to delay instant gratification it will be much easier to become financially free.

  3. Step 3

Learn New Things - Knowledge equals power. Learn as much as you can about personal finance and budgeting. Click around on some finance blogs and educate yourself. A few minutes a day can change your life.

  4. Step 4

Write down everything you spend - This will help you determine where you are spending your money. I am sure you will find that $50 to $100 is completely wasted each month. Could you use that money to pay off some credit card debt? What about saving it for your future?

  5. Step 5

Create a Plan - Once you determine where you are spending your money, you need to create a budget. This will help you to gain control over your spending. Tell your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.

  6. Step 6

Follow your plan - A budget is just a piece of paper if you do not follow it. Review your budget once a week, make corrections, and get back on track. These simple steps will help you to become financially free.

Tips & Warnings
  • Write down everything that you spend, no matter how small
  • Think before you charge that small dollar item - the interest could end up costing you more than the item did
  • Never give up
