Plan for Litter Box

This is an ideal project for any one with several cats or an animal shelter. For those of us who have more than one special cat living with us, having litter boxes scattered all over can get annoying when it comes time for clean up not to mention finding out of the way places to hide them. Most commercialy available litter boxes are on the small side, too. I have three cats and my solution was simple, cat tested and approved. It takes only a large storage container and maybe 15 or 20 minutes at most to create.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a 30 or 40 gallon plastic storage container by Sterilite or Tupperware with top
  • Sissors or shears strong enough to cut thick plastic
  • a short nape small rug or Astroturf
  • 20-30 pounds of the cat litter of your choice
  1. Step 1

Remove top and set it aside.

  2. Step 2

With the storage box right side up draw a rectangle about 9" X 12" on one end about 5 inches from the bottom of the container. This is the door opening.

  3. Step 3

    Cut out the opening.

  4. Step 4

You may decorate the sides any way you wish, but this is optional.

  5. Step 5

Place it in the location you wish it to be. Put the litter in and the top back on.

  6. Step 6

Place a small rug or piece of Astroturf at the entrance to knock the litter off little cat feet.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is OK to place the door along the long side. It all depends on what kind of space this box will be placed.
  • For a cat that is afraid of a closed in space, leave the top off until they get used to it.
  • Make sure the bottom of the door is 5 inches up from the bottom of the box so you have room for the litter.
