Recycle and Reuse Junk Mail

Research has estimated that American receive approximately 4 million tons of junk mail every year. Here are a few ideas to recycle and reuse your junk mail and junk mail envelopes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • junk mail
  • junk mail envelopes
  1. Step 1

Invest in a paper shredder and shred your junk mail for packing items, or shipping items.

  2. Step 2

Some recycling centers will take your junk mail. Give them a call to check.

  3. Step 3

Donate your junk mail envelopes to preschools. Many preschools will use them for the children to play "mailman".

  4. Step 4

Let your kids at home use the junk mail envelopes to write you letters.

  5. Step 5

Use junk mail envelopes to send lunch money to school.

  6. Step 6

Use the back side junk mail (if left blank) for notes, grocery lists, letters to teachers, and reminder notes.

  7. Step 7

Use junk mail envelopes to carry coupons to the store, and write your list right on the envelope if you can. Otherwise, use the backside of your junk mail papers to write your list.

  8. Step 8

Cut corners from junk mail envelopes to use as bookmarks (see the link in resources for step-by-step instructions).

  9. Step 9

Mail a funnel with a junk mail envelope (see link in resources for instructions).

  10. Step 10

Cut strips of junk mail and make a paper chain (see link in resources for instructions).

  11. Step 11

Let kids make junk mail collages (see resources for more information).

  12. Step 12

Make a junk mail window envelope bookmark.

  13. Step 13

Follow the tips on how to reduce or stop your junk mail from arriving in your mailbox using the link in resources below.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make a certain location in the house for a kids writing station or mail station.
  • Use caution when using your paper shredder or scissors, and properly store them in safe locations if you have children.
