Manage Asian Lady Beetle Infestations

Although many species of lady beetles are beneficial, the Asian Lady Beetle can be a real pest!

The Harmonia Axyrids, otherwise known as the Asian Lady Beetle, is native to Asia. From the 1960s to the 1990s the U.S. Department of Agriculture introduced them into the United States to help control agricultural pests. In the US the Asian Lady Beetle inhabits crops such as tobacco, corn, and soybeans. Throughout the spring and summer these beetles feed mainly on aphids, eating hundreds per day.

September through October swarms of Asian Lady Beetles fly to buildings on warm sunny days. They leave their summer feeding sites in search of protected places to hibernate over the winter. At this point, these insects can become a real nuisance! They may enter your home through openings around windows, door frames, attics, eaves, vents, and overhangs.

Here are some tips on managing the Asian Lady Beetle's habit of winter hibernation and help for keeping them out of your home.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    VACCUM:
Vacuuming these beetles is an effective, but temporary fix to their infestation. Do not squish them because they emit an odor and leave yellow secretions which will stain fabrics, walls, window blinds, etc.

  2. Step 2

    SEAL:
During the spring and summer months seal all cracks and openings around windows, door frames, attics, eaves, vents, and overhangs using expanding spray foam or caulk. Keeping these pests out in the first place is the best prevention.

  3. Step 3

    SPRAY:
You can hire professional pest control to spray your home, or you can do it yourself. Purchase a pesticide such as Spectracide, or Ortho Home Defense Max. These are widely available at most home improvement stores and garden centers. Spray all exterior areas that may be attractive to Asian Lady Beetles such as around windows, doors, and vents. Remember to read and follow the label directions for safe use during treatment.

Tips & Warnings
