Things You'll Need:
- Oven
- Shortening (to grease the baking pan)
- Mixing bowl
- 8-inch square baking dish
- 4 medium tart cooking apples (suggestions include Granny Smith, Rome, Greening, or Honeycrisp) to equal 4 cups of sliced apples
- ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
- ½ cup all-purpose or self-rising flour
- ½ cup oats - quick cooking or old-fashioned
- 1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
- ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¾ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Ice cream, whipped cream, or cream to top (optional)
-
Step 1
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
-
Step 2
Wash, peel, and slice your apples.
-
Step 3
Grease the bottom and the sides of your baking dish with shortening.
-
Step 4
Spread the sliced apples evenly on the bottom of the baking dish.
-
Step 5
In a mixing bowl, combine the remaining ingredients, (except the ice cream, whipped cream or cream), until well mixed. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the apples. I usually mix the dry ingredients first and then add in the butter or margarine using a fork or pastry blender.
-
Step 6
Bake for about 30 minutes or until the topping of the crisp is golden brown. Another way to tell if your apple crisp is done is to pierce the apples with a fork. If the apples are tender, the crisp is done baking.
-
Step 7
Serve warm with cream, ice cream, or whipped cream.
