How to Remove Duplicate Songs From Your iTunes Library

Your iTunes library is a database that houses all your digital media, such as music, videos, movies and podcasts. As music is added to your iTunes library, you may discover that you have added duplicate copies of some songs. Removing duplicate songs from your iTunes library allows you to free up space. With iTunes, you can check for and remove duplicate songs that are similar or exactly the same by using the "Display Duplicates" and "Display Exact Duplicates" commands.

      Launch the iTunes application on your computer.

      Click the "Music" menu under the "Library" section on the left side of the iTunes screen.

      Display similar duplicates by clicking "File" at the top of the iTunes screen and selecting "Display Duplicates" from the drop-down menu. To display exact duplicates, hold down the "Shift" key on Windows computers or the "Alt" key on Mac computers and click "File" at the top of the iTunes screen and select "Display Exact Duplicates" from the drop-down menu.

      View the list of duplicate songs in the large box at the bottom of the iTunes screen.

      Click the name of the duplicate song that you want to remove from your iTunes library. Hold down the "Shift" key to select several songs at one time.

      Click "Edit" at the top of the iTunes screen and select "Delete" from the drop-down menu.
