How to Check How Many Backlinks a Website Has

Backlinks by definition are links that point back to a given website. They are also known as inbound links, or inlinks. The number of backlinks a website has plays a significant part in how that site will rank in the search engines. This article will teach you how to find out how many backlinks a website has.

1. Log on to http://www.yahoo.com.

2. Type the following command into the search bar: link:http://www.examplesite.com. Replace "examplesite.com" with the actual website that you are researching. Remember to put the "http://" before the website address, as Yahoo will not return the proper results without it.

3. Click "Web Search".

4. Yahoo will return the number of pages found in its index, as well as the number of backlinks (a.k.a. inlinks) for whatever site you typed in. If you want to see the total amount of backlinks to every page of a given site (not just its home page), click the drop-down arrow beside the "to:". It will give you the choice of seeing inlinks only to that particular URL ("Only this URL"), or to the entire site ("Entire Site"). Choose "Entire Site" to get a total number of links for the entire site.

Tips & Warnings

• Links are constantly being indexed and de-indexed all the time by the search engines, so whatever number Yahoo gives you will always be somewhat of an approximation.

• Do not try this with Google. Google does not count as many links as Yahoo does, so you will only see a fraction of the actual backlinks a website has if you use Google instead of Yahoo.
