Instructions

    • 1

Set up your garden. If you haven't already, pick a window in your house that gets a lot of sunlight during the day. You also want a window that is unobstructed by trees or bushes, with plenty of direct sunlight. If you want to put your herbs on the patio using a patio plot, make sure you put the patio plot in an area that gets an even amount of sunlight. If you can't find a spot that gets even sunlight, try to put it in a spot where you can easily rotate the plot periodically.

    • 2

If you are planting starters, fill your plant box or plot a little less than halfway with dirt. Create small indentations to place the starter on. The fill in the rest of the box with soil until all of the roots are covered. Water the soil generously.

    • 3

If you are planting seeds, fill the box 3/4 of the way and then make small holes with your pointer finger. In each hole place 4 to 6 seeds. Cover the seeds with 1to 2inches of dirt or until even and water the soil generously.

    • 4

Maintain your garden. You'll want to water your plans once every 2 to 3 days. Mist the leaves generously every day, preferably when it is warmest.

    • 5

After a while your plants will really start to thrive and you'll be able to harvest some of your herbs. If you are planting starters, you will probably be ready for your first harvest in 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the herb you are growing. If you started from seeds, then you'll probably need to wait 6 to 8 weeks, again depending on the herb.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are new to growing your own herbs, you may want to try easy to grow herbs like basil and mint to start off with.

  • A good way to gauge how much water you should use is to check how much moisture reaches the bottom of the box by using a Popsicle stick. If any part of the stick comes out clean, you need more water.
