Make a Pilgrim Hat From a Paper Bag

If your child needs a pilgrim hat for a Thanksgiving play at school, or you just want to make a fun pilgrim hat for around the house, this craft is perfect for you. You can make a paper bag pilgrim hat with a few basic materials found around your home, and transform your child into an adorable pilgrim for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Toy bucket that will fit on your child's head
  • 2 brown paper bags
  • Child's black dress belt with buckle
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Find a plain beach bucket that rests well on your child's head without slipping down over his eyes.

  2. Step 2

Place the bucket upside down on a flat work surface.

  3. Step 3

Use scissors to cut the seams of the two brown paper bags. You should cut every seam so that the paper bags are completely open and laying flat, forming one large rectangle.

  4. Step 4

Tape the sides of the two paper bags together. You can overlap the bags slightly when taping to make it look more like one solid piece.

  5. Step 5

Put the black dress belt around the thickest part of the bucket and buckle it. You may need to punch an extra hole into the belt with scissors. Leave about 3 inches of belt sticking out after the buckle, but use scissors to cut off any other excess that is hanging out.

  6. Step 6

Leave the belt buckled and slip it off the top of the bucket.

  7. Step 7

Center the large sheet of paper bag over the top of the bucket and push it down around the bucket. Mold the paper bag to the sides of the bucket so that it takes its shape.

  8. Step 8

Press the buckled belt down over the top of the bucket and push it all the way down to the base. Be careful not to push too hard, or you will rip the brown paper bags.

  9. Step 9

Cut off any excess paper bag that is hanging down from the bottom of the bucket. Leave about 1 to 2 inches of paper bag hanging from the bottom.

  10. Step 10

Use your fingers to flip the edges at the bottom of the paper bag outwards, forming a small brim for the hat.

  11. Step 11

Carefully slide the paper bag hat off of the bucket, and place it on your child's head.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to find a belt with a gold buckle to use for your pilgrim hat.
  • If your paper bag has a design on it, flip the backs inside out before putting them on your hat.
  • Paint your pilgrim hat black if you want a fancier look.
  • Use caution when poking new holes in the belt.
