Step 1
GO FOR A WALK - For little kids, everything is new! Try taking them for a short walk, to tucker them out even more try making them walk. Be sure to be ready to carry them if they tire. Point out fun objects like dogs, cats, boats, trailers, flowers...if berries or fruits are in season and you know they're safe kids get a kick out of snacking on them!
-
Step 2
PILLOWS AND BLANKETS - Kids LOVE jumping around with blankets and pillows. Find an open space in your house and lay out extra blankets and pillows from your rooms. Take turns jumping into them and playing peek-a-boo.
-
Step 3
PLAY OUTSIDE- Take a few minutes to catch up on weeding and cleaning up the yard. Your little one will love helping you, get him/her a few little spades or even spoons to dig with. If you find any cool bugs show your child, they will love seeing the wiggly little things!
-
Step 4
TAKE A BATH - At the end of the day, if you're at your wits end, the bath is a great place for a toddler to stay entertained. This works with a kiddy pool as well if the weather is nice. Your toddler will love the surprise chance to take a bath and you will enjoy the peace that comes with a happily confined child.
-
Step 5
LISTEN TO MUSIC AND DANCE - This takes energy on your part but the rewards are definitely worth it. Turn on your favorite CD, pick up your child and dance like you used to! Twirling and exaggerated dance moves will send your toddler into giggles. Try singing loud and out of tune and they will laugh at your antics! This is great for getting out stress or anxious energy too!

on 9/10/2008 I am a work-at-home mom with a 2 year old. He's wonderful, but he does require some entertainment (I live to call it direction) to keep out of trouble. These are great ideas! Thanks *****

on 9/9/2008 Go For a Walk: Preschools do this as a way for the preschoolers to recognize their environment. It's educational as well as fun. If you have a stroller, let the toddler push it until he's tired, then you can push him in the stroller. Check for neighborhood parks to go to, also.
Pillows and Blankets: You can also make a tent fort with them. Even toddlers like a private space, especially if they make it!
Love your ideas. As a Child Development Instructor who taught preschool teachers how to teach infants, toddlers and preschoolers, I endorse your article. Great ideas!
